Abdul Kadir must stay!
Abdul has been in the United Kingdom for most of his adult life. He arrived here in 1982 with false papers, fleeing political persecution. Wrongly advised not to apply for political asylum, he worked in a restaurant where he had a horrific accident in November 1993. A colleague lost his life and Abdul had his right leg amputated just below the knee. He also suffered brain damage and now has epileptic fits. Abdul remains in the care of a neurologist at Middlesbrough General Hospital and takes anti-convulsive tablets.
Abdul claimed political asylum in 1994 but was refused due to a lack of evidence. There is no future for Abdul as a disabled person in Bangladesh. His only chance of survival and hope for the future is here in Britain where he is sure of assistance from both his uncle and cousin, both in regular employment.
The Government recognises that unscrupulous "immigration advisors" are operating in the United Kingdom, giving wrong advice and taking money under false pretences. Home Secretary Jack Straw has announced a long overdue licensing system for all immigration advisors. But victims of wrongful advice should not be punished as in Abdul's case.
Mo Mowlam MP supports Abdul's application to stay and said in a letter to the Immigration Service in May that there were "compelling grounds for allowing his application for compassionate reasons".
